This Is How I Wanna Die

Hello my friend,

The other day, I was goofing around with my friend and I started laughing so hard my sides hurt, water shot out my nose, and I was crying two waterfalls down my face. And it was awesome. Every single muscle fiber in my body relaxed, there was no thought — it was just pure joy.

That’s when it occurred to me: dying from laughter has got to be the only way to go. There is no greater feeling than laughing so hard you can’t breathe. May we all be so lucky. So start laughing with others, make it a habit, and up your chances to go out like this. It may not happen in that final moment, but one thing is certain: that will be a good life.

Comedy, silliness, playfulness, and laughter are rarely brought up in the lists of things to do for spiritual or mental well-being. But I think they are the magic keys. Comedy and laughter are profound tools for healing. They soothe the bad times and make good times even greater.

They are the natural byproduct of joy, and if we aren’t feeling particularly joyful, we can always look for the funny, absurd, and silliness in our situation. Sometimes our mind leads us, but we can lead our mind too.

Comedy is not all laughing at others. It doesn’t have to be mean-spirited (and I particularly like it when it’s not). It can be finding the humor in the mundane and the unexpected. It can be an expression of love.

Would you rather live in a tragedy or a comedy? Luckily, we all get to choose. There is tragedy in everyone’s life, but comedy is what helps us get through it.

You don’t have to be a standup comedian either. You can watch comedies, you can read humor, and you can laugh with your friends. When you start looking for the humor in life, life gets funny.

In times when people take things too seriously, when we worry if laughing is appropriate, and when we worry if a joke is going to be taken the wrong way, let’s remind ourselves and others that more laughter is the answer. Not less. Play games, do your worst impressions, and don’t be afraid to snort.
