How Do We Become Aware of Awareness?

In meditation, we can become aware of awareness itself.

The first step is simple. Close your eyes and begin by noticing your thoughts. Don’t try to change them. Just observe what the thoughts are, the nature of the thoughts, how one thought jumps to another, how they arise and how they fade away. Really look at what a thought is.

As you observe your thoughts, notice something deeper: you are aware of them. Bring your attention to that awareness itself. That awareness is our higher consciousness. It is our highest intelligence. It exists beyond the mind.

We are not the thinker of thoughts. We are the one who is aware of the thinking.

As you continue, allow yourself to remain aware not only of your thoughts, but also of any sounds around you. Notice how sounds arise and fall away, just like thoughts. You don’t have to lose focus on anything. Simply let everything be included in awareness.

Pay attention to how effortlessly you are able to observe all of this. Thoughts appear. Sounds appear. Sensations appear. And yet, the awareness that perceives them remains unchanged.

Notice how beneath the thoughts and beneath the sounds, there is a stillness, an unchanging, quiet presence. Rest your attention in that stillness. Keep your awareness on the awareness itself, the one that perceives thoughts, sounds, and sensations.

That awareness is who you are. That awareness is our true nature.
