A Message from Your Future Self

I have a very important message to deliver from your future self. And since this is Stress Awareness Month, now seems like a good time to share. Here’s how I received the message.

Several years back, I was spending a lot of time outside the country. So, I gave a trusted family member access to my bank account so he could deposit checks for me and that sort of thing. I trusted other close family members to hold onto my valuable possessions while I was gone. Upon my return, my money and valuables were stolen. To top it off, my downstairs neighbors burned down my apartment, and someone had just driven into the side of my car totaling it. And just to put my spirituality to the ultimate test, I did not have a job at the time because I had just returned back to the States.

Most people have a crisis before their spiritual journey, but I’ve always been the contrarian and my crisis came afterwards. Thank goodness I had a strong spiritual foundation and a lot of wisdom to draw on. Of course, I started to sense extreme panic and stress bubble up within me, and that is when the message hit me, a message from my future self, but really it’s from all of our future selves. It said:

“Don’t worry so much. Everything works out and you should’ve enjoyed it more.”

That insight brought me back to life. We cannot escape our journey of growth, and nor should we. But we can escape the needless stress and worry. We can love the adventure, and every good adventure has high stakes, big ups and downs, and an uncertain outcome.

A lot of people think stress is due to their unique circumstances. That if they could only fix this one problem, or get away from that one person, they will finally be able to have a stress-free life. But I am here to tell you, there will always be something. If it’s not money, it’s work. If it’s not work, it’s aging. If it’s not aging, it’s what other people think. If it’s not what other people think, it’s usually money again because there’s never enough money.

Isn’t it interesting how stress and excitement are nearly identical feelings. Both are that feeling of adrenaline coursing through our veins. The only difference is fear vs faith.

Let me tell you, each of those things that happened to me were the greatest blessing I could have ever hoped for. I got to consciously rebuild my life from scratch. Unrepentant people who weren’t meant for my life exited themselves with their actions. And I wouldn’t have changed a single thing… except maybe enjoyed it even more.

Whatever you’re going through, whatever you’re working out, whatever you’re trying to build or fix or change, don’t worry. You got this. Everything works itself out in the end. Your job is just to keep going and try not to make your future self come find you. It’s just a roller coaster, it’s totally safe, and at the end it glides to a stop and we exit. So remember to relax and have fun.

Much love,
Todd
